Cleaning Stove Burners- no scrub method

I totally meant to take before and after pictures for you...but my phone was broken and my camera charger is lost somewhere :( I have had a rough run with technology for the past month.

So, I was pretty amazed by how well this process worked, but I will definitely need to do it again in a couple weeks. My burners have only been cleaned once other than this in the last year, and the previous tenants were...less than clean. Lol. So next time I will take before and after pictures for sure!

This is a super simple process and takes little effort. I will NEVER do anything else again!!! =)

All you do is take the burners out, and the burner grates. Put each one into a separate gallon ziploc bag. Add a quarter cup of straight ammonia to each bag. Seal the bags and put them outside overnight. I left mine in the sink, but they WILL leak, so if you're not far far away from the sink, you will want them outside. Ammonia is stiiiinky! Your burners don't need to be soaking in the ammonia, it's actually the fumes that will break down all the grease and grime. Let them sit for 12-16 hours.

When you open the bags, dump out the liquid and use a soapy sponge to run over the burner/grate while you rinse it off. You shouldn't have to do any scrubbing at all. If there is a spot that doesn't come shiny clean with a quick swipe of the sponge, you can make a baking soda and peroxide paste to scrub it clean.

This is 100% the cleanest my burners/grates have EVER been, and I spent about 15 minutes total on it. I'm sooo sorry I don't have pictures to prove it....but I WILL show you soon!! And trust me, it works!!

Make your own chunky crayons

A few weeks ago I read about Crayon Rocks. I thought these were such a great idea! I started shopping around and honestly, I just couldn't justify spending upwards of $15 on some crayons. No stores around me carry them so I would have to order online and pay shipping...no thanks.

 

So I decided to take our crayons, since baby girl couldn't grip them right anyway, and make her some chunky crayons. We've been working on learning colors, so I figured I'd start with just the rainbow colors.

 

I used some crayons from a Crayola 64ct box. I've heard that the cheaper brands tend to separate [wax separates from color] when you melt them, so I'd stick to Crayola. I used a mini muffin tin as a mold- each cup fit about 3 crayons. I just removed the paper and broke them up like you can see here.

 

 

They're a little melted already...I forgot to take a picture until I had already put them in the oven. Pre heat the oven to 275 before you put the crayons in. Any hotter and you will bake the crayons instead of just melting them. Oh, and this will probably stain your muffin pan so if you don't want that you should use some muffin cups. I don't mind, I've never used this mini muffin pan as long as I've had it.

 

I baked them for about 15 minutes. You can see where I splashed the red everywhere. It even went into the orange, which actually swirled very prettily in there. I think next time we will make some tie dye crayons! :)

 

Make sure you let the pan cool a little bit after melting them. Once it's cool to the touch put it in the freezer for 25-30 minutes. Don't ever put a hot pan in the freezer it will mess up the whole dynamic of the refridgerator.

 

If you leave them in too long, they will crack down the middle. Get a towel or something cushy to dump the crayons onto, they will break if you just dump them on the counter.

 

They came out GREAT!! Baby girl LOVES them and has been coloring up a storm! I'm so glad they were so easy to make, and I can promise you we will be doing this again SOON!!

Where were you?

 

Every year we all share where we were, who we were with and what we remember. Things and people I would have otherwise forgotten are remembered each year on the anniversary. I was at a school I only attended for 8 weeks, yet I remember the walk from 2nd to 3rd period like it was yesterday. We were outside in gym class, so I heard about it afterward. My friend Lauren Tuitt, who I haven't spoken to pretty much since then, came up to me in the hallway and told me. I thought she was kidding. No one really seemed to know what was going on when I got to 3rd period. That was Chemistry class. With Mr. Kennedy, who later got fired for his actions during that class. We had turned on the TV before he came in to see what was happening. We saw enough to know it was real, and it was terrifying. We saw the tower start to fall. And then the teacher came in and turned off the TV. He chastised us for caring what was happening. Told us it didn't concern us. He the proceeded to lead a prayer. His class was the only class that this was not common- it was a catholic school. However, rather than praying for the victims or for our country, he prayed for us. That we would realize how insignificant this event was, and that we would stop worrying about things that did not matter. Still to this day I am filled with fire when I think about his prayer. How dare he.

 

Because of that, I didn't learn anything until lunch. After chem class was religion, and we spent the whole period in silent prayer. They had made an announcement at the beginning of class dismissing anyone who's parents worked there, surprisingly there were quite a few people directly affected. Then at lunch we watched channel 1 news. I don't even think I ate. I don't remember anything else until I got home that day. MTV was on- I must have left the TV on when I left for school. "I'm Real" was playing. And in the corner where there's normally some annoying kid doing a shout out over the song was a thumbnail picture of the towers falling and the rubble. I must have watched the footage a thousand times. Then they decided it was too graphic to show on TV.

 

I hate remembering that day. I can't believe it was 11 years ago. I hope my daughter never has to experience anything like I did that day, or any tragedy even remotely similar. Instead of remembering where I was, I want to remember those we lost. I want to remember the heroes of that day. Even the brief moment where I found President Bush inspiring.
