The first 5 days of Christmas

It's finally December!! Finally time for Christmas songs and decorations and all the fun, happy family memories that go along with the season! Our schedules have been really busy this year, with hubby starting his new job and L starting her new school, Baby Elf starting to walk and my pair of 3 year olds. So we decided to try and do at least one fun, Christmasy activity each day in December until Christmas Eve.

Today is December 5, so I wanted to fill you in on what we have been doing this week so far. I'll try to write up a post each day, but like I said, we are super busy!!

December 1st we didn't do much of anything. My final paper was due for one of my classes, so I spent most of the day doing that. And we spent a total of 4 and a half hours in the car. We were listening to Christmas music...if that counts.

December 2nd was another busy day. Dance class in the morning, parent observation day no less, head start visits and more commuting. We took the afternoon to just hang out together and watch the Christmas episodes for their favorite shows (Bubble Guppies, Doc McStuffins and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse). These kids are SO EXCITED to see Santa on TV again!! They spent most of the afternoon jumping up and down either screaming or singing 3 year old versions of Santa Claus is Coming to Town...obviously a fantastic time.

December 3rd felt like a crafty kind of day, so we made a felt Christmas tree. Last year at Target's after-Christmas clearance I scored some great activity kits, and this was one of them. It would be super easy to do on your own- without the kit.

Materials needed:
1-1.5 yd green felt
1 yd white felt
.25 yd of each red, yellow, orange, blue and pink felt (or whatever colors you want!)
2 yd red ribbon of any kind (optional)
Adhesive of some kind (glue gun, glue dots, velcro....whatever you like)

Instructions:
  • Cut the green felt into the shape of a Christmas tree. Include the star on top, you'll need the base felt so your star will stick. Make the bottom flat, we will stick it to a tree skirt. Our tree was about 40" tall and 34" across.
  • Cut the white felt into a semi-circle the length of the base of the tree. This will be the tree skirt. Ours was about 36" across and 18" tall. If you want to weave the ribbon around the edge of the skirt, cut slits in the felt 3" apart around the curve. Then weave the ribbon through the slits.
  • Attach the base of the tree to the flat side of the skirt using whichever type of adhesive you chose.
  • Hang your tree up! Use either push pins or tape to attach the tree to the wall.
  • Cut ornaments, lights, candy canes, presents, etc out of your felt. You can check out our tree for ideas. I would do this part ahead of time, away from the children, unless you have an older child who is skilled with scissors and would like to help.
  • After the shapes are all cut out, it's time to decorate! Let the kids go to town. The felt will stick to other felt, so they can hang up their ornaments and take them down as many times as they want!

The dog promptly pulled the tree off the wall the second she was unsupervised, so keep that in mind when choosing a spot to hang it. The kids were so proud and excited. Bug asked me to send this picture to her Aunt Kaitlyn right away. When their cousin came to visit L told her she was going to show her how cute their flat tree was. Have fun!!

December 4th we got our Christmas tree!! Hubby wanted to cut our tree down again, but with his new schedule the tree farms were all closed by the time we were able to go. The family decided to head to the fairgrounds and get a pre-cut tree. It took a lot less time and we missed the experience of the tree farm...the hay ride and the horses, getting stuck in some serious mud and wandering in the cold for hours trying to find that perfect tree...but it was much easier, and cheaper! While daddy put the tree up and the lights on, we watched a couple Christmas movies- The Year Without a Santa Claus and Ernest Saves Christmas, a couple of family favorites!! When it was time to hang the ornaments we watched part of Peter Pan Live! (which I absolutely loved!!! Mary Martin's Peter Pan was one of my favorites as a kid, and this was just the PERFECT reboot! Also, Chistopher Walken...)

I disagreed with my Pastor today...

I disagreed with my Pastor today...

It's pretty normal, I'd say. No one agrees with another person 100% of the time. But this was a serious disagreement. One that I kept to myself. He said, "If you have a problem with this, then you have a problem with the entire Bible. If you don't believe this, you can't believe in Jesus."

Evolution. What a hot topic in the religious versus science debate. I've managed to stay away from it for the most part. This time, the whole sermon was on creationism...and how evolution is insane. It took every ounce of self restraint, and a little help from my husband, to keep from yelling out my disagreement...or walking out of service.

Of course I'm not saying everyone should believe exactly the same thing. But you cannot turn your nose up at hard evidence and facts simply because it is not what your ancestors believe. That's what the church did when science said the Earth was round, that the Earth rotated around the Sun and not the other way around, Dinosaurs existence...and now Evolution.

Before I tell you what it is exactly that I believe, I'm going to start with my pastors speech, and why it was wrong.

First, his main argument was that of the guy in the red hat in that video we all saw circulating on facebook not too long ago. Somehow it take more faith to believe in Evolution because that is somehow believing that things ended up the way they did "by accident"...that something came from nothing and accidentally organisms came into existence boom, culture happened.

Just, no. The only part of the Theory of Evolution that has no evidence in science is the Big Bang. (Which was an awful lot like someone just said, "let it be" and then it was...) From there, everything happened for a reason...a reason which can be explained both scientifically and religiously. Nothing was an accident. Planets formed as a result of gravitational pull, a phenomenon we can still see occurring in the universe. On our planet, we know the atmosphere was intense. It was full of electricity and energy. This environment has been replicated in the lab. There was a carbon based compound- the only thing that has no explanation (could this be "Adam"...or an atom?...just saying). With an explosion of energy, the first single celled organism came into being. This has been replicated in a lab. More than once. From that point on every single change has been selected for. Natural selection is also a process we can see in action still today.

The argument that almost made me cry out was that there are no fossils showing any transition between animals of any kind. What?? I mean...what?! Please, please educate yourself before you lecture the masses. There is ample fossil evidence supporting Evolution. We can literally watch the giraffe's neck stretch out over time through fossils. That is Evolution. We can watch the transition from tiny tree climbing rodent like creature to ape like animals to hominids to modern humans. There is no missing link. We can literally watch it happen. This is like telling me Evolution didn't happen because there are still monkeys. Of course there are still monkeys...they took a different path in Evolution. We share ancestors...every single organism on this planet has evolved from that first single celled organism. Everything. Sometimes things go extinct. That happens when the environment changes and the attributes that were selected for are no longer beneficial to the animal.

There have been flaws in the Theory of Evolution along the way. Things have been modified. Since the idea was first postulated we have been able to watch things change. We have found new fossils which are, in fact, evidence of Evolution.

I understand that the people who still think that Evolution is a lie are stubborn, hard-headed individuals and my blog post will more than likely not change their minds, but maybe a handful of them will be incited to do some research on their own. Or at least stop alienating those of us who have.

When I started college, it was the first time I really learned about Evolution. I was raised Catholic and had never really gone into depth with either idea of how things came to be. I had always kind of accepted creationism, because Evolution seemed so far fetched. Of course, this theory is the first thing I had to study in depth as a Biology major. The second Bio professor I had told us the first day that she was a devout Christian. Yet she stood before us teaching Evolution. My brain couldn't process this information. She told us that science and religion shouldn't be at odds. God gave us the desire to understand the things around us. It is inherently human nature to explore and investigate. Evolution is a beautiful and complicated process that should be appreciated for how complex, how intricate it truly is. To me, Evolution is quite possibly the truest evidence of God's hand. I stared at her blankly for a while. I didn't agree at all. But I was starting to buy into Evolution.

As college went on and I learned about religions of the world, origins of religions, the horrible things Christians have done in the name of God...I strayed. I referred to myself as Agnostic and my bestie was an avid Atheist. I studied science and Evolution. I studied world religions and theology. I developed my own beliefs. When I first started to make my way back to God I realized that I would not be accepted my most believers. Fellowship was an impossible thing for me, as an anthropology student, and then graduate, my work focuses on evolution, both biological and cultural. My colleagues provide validation for other world religions, and show the cultural evolution of Christianity. These ideas got me berated and screamed out. I was excited about them and wanted to share. I ended up getting scolded and, of course, threatened with burning in hell.

For the next few years I forged my own relationship with God. We spoke daily, he gave me peace when I needed it. I saw my blessings in everything, I was always thankful. The outdoors were my Church. I had my own version of communion and I prayed all the time. I felt closer to God than I ever had inside the judgmental doors of a small minded church.

One day, when things were truly horrible in my life, I asked God for help. He spoke to me, told me a name. That one name changed my life. I went to that person, he helped me straight out of the situation, healed my child and has raised both of my children as his own, married me and provided for me, given me everything I could possibly ask for in life. The one thing he asked of me was that we return to church. It has actually been fine up to this point, and it will be fine in the future. This is just something that I will have to deal with from Christians, I believe. I don't need my pastor to tell me I'm going to heaven. I know where I stand.

Now, for my belief on Evolution...

Have you heard of Intelligent Design? That's kind of what I believe. That God created everything through the Big Bang and orchestrated all of the following events. That he created environments and forces which caused everything to happen exactly as it has. Of course, I didn't always believe it was God, I believed it was a creator, though...or many creators. But if God controls everything, if the weather and the atmosphere culturally are all byproducts of Him and His will, isn't it reasonable to assume that perhaps things happened just the way he wanted them to happen? And to take this into Biblical context....let's talk about the 7 days in which God created the Universe. If you break those days down, each day corresponds to a different phase in Evolution.

Day 1: Light created and divided from darkness

It's obvious to me that this is the Big Bang. Before the Big Bang everything was only darkness. Then a flash of light and the Universe came to be.

Day 2: Atmosphere created and divided from oceans

This also happened. After the planets had formed and there were no further particles to be pulled in by gravity the atmosphere was formed. Water covered most of the Earth's surface. Science accepts these as facts as well.

Day 3: Land created and divided from water. Vegetation created.

This is shortly after life began. Evolution had started and progressed from a single celled organism to plant life. As time passed less of the Earth was covered by water and more was covered by land. I believe this was attributed to shifting in tectonic plates, but this is not my area of expertise. I only know that as time went on, this also happened.

Day 4: Sun, Moon and Stars created to fill the sky.

It would most likely take this long for these things to come into view, through the young atmosphere and across light years of time. (however, the sun existed before life began. Plants could not have survived without sunlight. There would have been no light without the sun. I never questioned that when God said "let there be light" and it was so, that the sun came into existence.)

Day 5: Creatures created to fill sky and water.

It is common knowledge that Evolution began in the sea. Organisms like plankton began to change into diatoms and other small organisms, and eventually into fish and so on. Amphibians and reptiles were next, which also lived in or near the water. These creatures first evolved into birds before anything else. It is here that the age of the dinosaurs begins. They began as birds and evolved from birds.

Day 6: Creatures created to fill land. Man created as pinnacle

And this is when dinosaurs walked the Earth. Other land animals evolved. Evolution was actually in full swing. New creatures were being created all the time. And our ancestor, the tree shrew-type mammal, came into existence. Whatever happened, a mass extinction event occurred. All this evolution had happened already, and then a ton of it was wiped out. Our tiny ancestor survived. And with the extinction of the mega fauna, it was able to evolve. Hominoid evolution was complicated. I won't detail it here. But the end of this phase would occur as man became agricultural. As we settled down and developed families and towns. And this is when we first began our search for religion.

Day 7: God rested from his work

And allowed culture to form. Which is the fruit of the forbidden tree. As we explored our new thoughts and feelings, our curiosity took hold. That inherent desire to investigate took hold and God knew he must limit our minds. We could be in his image but could not be free of earthly desires.

If you are really interested I could go into further aspects of the Old Testament how I see them, through science, in future blog posts. But I'll stop here for now.

One final statement, this idea that I can't be a Christian at all if I believe in Evolution, that somehow education pushes us away from God and Heaven (another argument my pastor shared) is why I strayed from Christ. It's why Christians have a bad rap...why they are seen to be ignorant by many intellects. It's like the church just says you must accept everything I tell you without ever looking for your own explanation, evidence, correlating ideas, or anything else. Just, I said it and that's it. It's in this book that was written a couple thousand years ago by groups of people, comprised of "eye witness" accounts written decades after the events occurred and then picked through by political and religious councils over the years to determine which books were relevant to their government. The first thing science teaches us is to question everything. Do your own research. Be educated. That doesn't mean you set out to prove Christians wrong, or the Bible false. The Bible has shown us it is an historical document, we have found buried cities and other artifacts by reading the directions in the Bible. I'm just saying. If we could just keep learning about our world and incorporate it into our beliefs, there would be less segregation, less judgement, less of this feeling that it's either science or religion.

I am a scientist. I am a Christian. And the world just needs to come to terms with it.

I've got Wedding Fever!!!

I promised you guys I would write a post on the birthday parties we had....and I will. But today all I can think about is my wedding!!

Most of you know we eloped in September. Sunday we will have been married for two months :)

We are planning a legit wedding, though. I want the dress and the party and everyone looking at me- at us...seeing how completely in love we are, and celebrating our lives with us. So we have been planning our wedding for about 2 months now. We already knew who would be in our bridal parties. He knew who would be his best man.

You all know about my love affair with Pinterest. It runs my life sometimes. So, of course, I took to Pinterest right away to start planning the wedding. First was the dress.

I found this picture. It was PERFECT! I was sure that it wouldn't fit like I wanted, or that I wouldn't be able to find it. But I had to try it on....I knew I wouldn't be able to buy a dress until I had ruled this one out. I searched for salons that carried the designer- Mori Lee. I found 4 in the area, one in our hometown, 2 about an hour away and a fourth in the next town over. I tried the one in our town first, obviously. I showed the attendant the picture on Pinterest to start. We gathered dresses, I was getting disheartened because none of them were the dress I wanted. The last one she picked up was it! The one I found online! I wanted to try it on first, so I could move on when it wasn't all I hoped it would be.

This is the only sneak peek I can share...I'm trying real hard to keep it a secret from hubby <3

It. Was. PERFECT!!! I almost cried. Mom almost cried. Everyone made the same face, a face that said omg don't even think about taking that off! The attendant put a veil on me and that was that. I want it! We bought it that day.

My new hubby and I recently found a home church- one which we are in the process of joining. And now, we will be starting our lives as husband and wife right there. We are so excited to have found a home before we began to plan our wedding. And over the moon that our beloved pastor will be officiating the ceremony. The best man, a friend of my husband's for like 20 years and mine for at least 15, is helping us set up our reception at the restaurant where he bartends. He's also going to have his band play at our reception for free.

My MOH and I are getting ready to make the invitations ourselves (people are CRAZY with what they charge for wedding invitations!! What the heck???) and we're going to make decorations for the church and reception ourselves too. My goal is to make this all happen for less than $5,000....but right now my estimate is like $11,000.

We cut costs with the photographer, my nephew's god-mom does photography super part time so we roped her in with the promise of seeing the little guy in an adorable tux and fedora <3 our ring bearers are going to be ADORABLE!! So instead of paying $1,500 for a photographer, we'll be paying her $5-700. My twin-in-law will be in charge of flowers for us, I'm pretty sure. She has like 10 years or more of floral experience.

Hubby is a twin, I call his twin sister my twin-in-law.

If any of my readers have any input or tips on wedding stuff...bridesmaids dresses, tux rentals, mother of the bride/groom stuff, decorations, anything like that....please please please share them with me!

If you want to make any donations to our wedding fund you can do so here...http://www.gofundme.com/gxayu4

Six Weeks of Birthdays

Whew! We have been BUSY the last couple months!!

I knew when we got home from vacation mid-August it was going to be non-stop until Halloween....I just didn't realize how long that actually was!! There was the normal kid stuff...school shopping, school starting, soccer practices and games (hubby gets in on that one, he coaches), then dance lessons get started and suddenly there's no time for anything. Ever.

The first week of September we started our Birthday Extravaganza with a Superman Party for our biggest 3 year old. To my complete surprise, there was absolutely nothing- I mean NOTHING Superman in the stores the whole time I was planning. It turned into a huge DIY project for me.

I think it turned out pretty okay, though!

The following week was when we decided to elope. We scurried around only 3 days after the party to get our marriage license, rings and something for each of us to wear. The next day we found an officiant and took the day off all our obligations and got hitched!!

Just one week later we got to go to a birthday party for my sweet little nephew. My sister did things the smart- and easy- way...she rented a room at World of Bounce (where she works). They do all the decorating for you, and they even supervise the kids while they play! It was stress and hassle free, that's for sure. A bit too pricey for us though.

We got a couple weeks to plan the next party after that. We decided to throw 2 parties for my oldest daughter, one for her friends and family and a separate one not at our house for her bio-dad's mom to come to. We invited his whole family (except him, restraining orders and whatnot...) but she is the only one who showed up.

Anyway....we had a pretty low-budget Spiderman Party the first week in October. Another decent DIY project for me.

With no preparation besides a Pinterest board, I think it turned out pretty awesome!

One more week and we're done. One more party and I can relax...

Doc McStuffins!! I was pretty excited about this one, I won't lie. But I was so burnt out with all the party planning...I had no desire to DIY anything. Huge bummer. I had big plans for the Doc party. Big DIY plans. Pinterest...always making me feel like I should be doing more.

I did DIY the tutu though....gotta get some credit for that, right??

Immediately after the party we packed up the family and went out of town for hubby's training. He started a whole new career in the midst of all of this. One that has changed every part of our daily routine.

Two days later it was my sister's birthday. Another two days and it's hubby's birthday. We came home for his birthday and the weekend, then packed up and left again until trick or treat.

And with that, the craziness comes to a close. I've moved on to wedding planning and planning our youngest's first birthday party. Oh yeah...and there's Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Posts on each of the birthday parties will be coming soon! I will link to them in this posts as soon as they are up :) Thanks for sticking with me through the madness!!

My Husband, the Hero

Whew! Things have been super crazy for me the past few weeks!!

I'm FINALLY getting a chance to write about what an amazing thing my husband did last weekend. He's legitimately a hero. I promise, I'm not just saying that because I love the guy.

So, his ex-wife. They have a complicated relationship and an ugly past. And she is more than unreliable when it comes to their children. Which only complicates things for everyone. Let's rewind to last weekend....

It's Saturday morning. Hubby's ex is supposed to pick up the girls at noon and keep them until 5. We see on facebook that she was in the hospital Friday night...the baby had no heartbeat for a while and they almost delivered. After a round of steroids the baby stabilized and they sent her home, but she was due back Saturday evening. Of course her appointment time conflicted with the time she was supposed to have the girls. So she was going to bring them back an hour early. She wanted to take them trick or treating at Wal Mart, so she asked us to get costumes together for them. We did, and had to explain to the girls why, so they were getting excited and looking forward to it. She refused to pick them up herself, wanting to send someone after them. Due to complicated past issues, hubby insisted it be her to pick them up or they weren't leaving. So she decided to take her other children trick or treating and said she would get the girls after.

At this point, I told my guy that I would be surprised if she didn't put herself in labor walking around the store for an hour carrying a toddler.

A little after 1 she told us she would be there in 20 minutes. The girls are already confused as to why she hasn't shown up, and why they don't get to trick or treat now. She pulls into the store next to the house, where hubby works part time. "Come out here, I need you" she texted him. She was literally screaming in pain. We know now what had happened was that when she tried to stand up to get out of the car her previous c-section scar, which was vertical, completely ruptured. She was bleeding out, internally. Pressure was near zero for her baby, who wasn't breathing and whose heart had stopped. Being the good man that he is, my husband called her parents and told them they needed to come and get her and take her to the hospital, like, now. She still wanted to get the girls and drive them to her parents house herself. Hubby had to half carry her from the driver's seat to the passenger's side. Her parents didn't like being told what to do, and told him he was exaggerating. They tried to just send one person to bring her back to their house. No, he insisted, you both come and get her to the hospital. Now.

We brought the girls to her so she could explain what was happening and why she couldn't pick them up. She cried, worried the girls sick. It was 1:44 when I got back to the house, her parents had not shown up yet. I don't know when they showed up or what time she got to the hospital, but I do know that by 2:07 she was headed back to the OR for a c-section and an emergency hysterectomy. By 2:11 the baby was out. 5-10 more minutes and neither of them would have made it.

Her and her parents have shocked everyone by personally and publicly thanking my husband for saving two lives that day. Had she been anywhere else when it happened, things would not have turned out so well. His ex wife is home and the baby is at Children's. She was 30 weeks along when he was born, and he was only 2 pounds. He's already gained 7 ounces and may be home by Christmas.

Other than when we took the girls to her hospital room to visit her, she hasn't seen them. Except for when I called her so they could talk to her after she woke up from surgery, she hasn't talked to them. Her parents took the girls for a few hours while I went wedding dress shopping (yay!!) but their mom was up at Children's all day. As far as we understand, she drove herself an hour away....a week after surgery.

The situation continues to baffle me. But I do know that I married the best possible person to be in this situation with. He blows my mind with his kindness and love for everyone...even those who have extremely wronged him in the past. My husband, the hero <3

The Science of Being Charlee

We have a new name!!

I really wanted to incorporate my name into my blog, so when someone told me about the book series The Art of Being Charlee, I knew what I wanted to do right away. I live in a world of science, so obviously my life would accurately be "The Science of Being Charlee."

There ya have it!!

What should I.....

It's been over a year since I've posted anything at all. And it's been the absolute craziest year of my life!!

I'll catch you up in a minute.

First, let's talk about my name. I need to change it up. First of all, I'm not in Columbus anymore. Second of all, I need this to be about more than just coupons. So, I'm taking suggestions :) What should I call my blog??

Now I'm going to ramble on about myself for a while... consider it a reintroduction. If you don't know me, I'm Charlee. I'm in grad school now, getting my Masters degree focusing on Autism studies, special education and behavior analysis. I love exploring the new treatments and developments in the field, and I have big ideas for the future. The rest of the time I am a stay-at-home mom to four amazing little girls between 8 months old and 4 years old. The oldest goes to preschool, the others stay home with me. We try to do some homeschool/unschool type stuff as much as we can.

Now for the biggest news... I just got married!! We decided on a whim to run off and elope, luckily we are in Ohio and we could get our marriage license instantly and said our vows the next day. Somehow my big mouth managed to keep it mostly quiet, until my sister instagrammed a "just married" picture... which was instantly shared by hubby's ex-wife's aunt (crazy much?!) Hubby and I decided we would still have a big wedding, fancy dress and all. I just started planning it, um... yesterday lol. So expect to see a lot of that stuff on here :)

I've been on the longest couponing hiatus ever.... haven't had a single haul since the baby was born...over 8 months ago (yikes!!) My stockpile is running low, and it's really time to get back on my game. With the couponing, I will start meal planning again.... anything to cut back on expenses.

With everything else going on around here, we just found our dream property. The house is crap, they're charging way too much... but we love it. Buying a house is crazy. All the time and back and fourth with the crazy home owners. It's exhausting. The plan is to buy the land, tear down the house and build our dream. Serious future building going on over here!!

So that's what you'll be reading about over here, for the most part. Anything and everything to do with my life right now.... autism studies and treatments, homeschooling, unschooling, preschool ideas, kids crafts and activities, cleaning and organization ideas and schedules and hacks, recipes and meal plans, budgets, my new life as a wife and step-mom, couponing, frugal living, wedding planning, house buying and building....

We are also joining a church... it's the first time in my life I will be a member of a religious organization of any kind. You can probably count on some of that journey making it's way onto the blog too. Anything and everything "Charlee".

So.... what should I call my blog??
