Our Rainbow Birthday Party- a huge hit!!

Here it is!! Our rainbow party! We didn't have to do much decorating, since the party was at a local restaurant, but I wanted to do as much as I could :) This was our main table. I had two cakes, one on both sides of the table. The fish bowls in the middle are edible...but I wouldn't recommend it :)

I think I did a pretty good job icing these cakes :) We were a little torn between rainbow and fish for the theme of the party, so I tried to use both. She LOVES fish, and what kid doesn't want a super colorful party?? So I put colorful fish all over her rainbow cake :)

Yes, it was rainbow...on the inside! I made two tie dye cakes for her, and I gotta say, people LOVED them!! I didn't do anything special, really, just used regular Pillsbury white cake mix and vanilla frosting.

I just had to divide the cake batter up into 7 bowls and dye each one a different color. I was told to make sure I used gel food coloring because it wouldn't fade during baking, but for the life of me I couldn't find it. I also didn't go to any kind of specialty store. But I just used regular liquid food coloring and it turned out beautifully :)

And the camera really makes the orange look the same as the red...but they were very different.

After that, you just layer in each color. Both cakes are two layers, the bottom layer goes red to purple and the top layer goes purple to red.

I just wiggled the pans a little to get the batter to the edges. Make sure you use more of the first color than any other color, and the least of the last color. that way it can reach the edges.

And here's the finished product!! Awesome, right?? I can't believe how easy it was, I loved the way it turned out. I was hoping to have a rainbow baby after she was done cake smashing...but she wasn't too interested in cake at all. Lol.

Now for these super cool fish bowls. I really wish we could have eaten them. Maybe you could add some type of liquid flavoring?

Anyway, I got the recipe from Martha Stewart. I used two small fish bowls I got from Hobby Lobby for $3 each. You need one box (4 packets) of plain unflavored gelatin, a 2L of flat 7up or Sprite, one drop of blue food coloring, an some gummy fish. I used Swedish Fish I found on sale at Giant Eagle.
Pour 1 cup of soda into a bowl and empty all four packets of gelatin on top. Let sit until it softens. Boil the rest of the soda, then mix it in with the solid gelatin. Add one drop blue food coloring and there ya go! I poured it in my two small bowls and refrigerated it overnight. *You don't want to add the fish more than a few hours before serving, or the color will bleed out*

I ran a knife under warm water and cut slits in the gelatin where I wanted to insert the fish. It was not easy to keep it from breaking the top, but it turned out very nice :)

And there ya have it!! Our awesome rainbow party. Baby girl had a blast and so did the whole family :) And I'm already planning next year's party :) Lol.
